The Central Railway officially renamed Aurangabad railway station as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar railway station on Saturday (25 October), nearly three years after the state government formally changed Aurangabad city’s name, reported news agency PTI.
The station’s new code will be CPSN, the Central Railway said in a statement.
The station is part of the Nanded Division of South Central Railway.
The BJP-led Mahayuti government issued a gazette notification on 15 October to implement the change.
The move honours Chhatrapati Sambhaji, son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the second ruler of the Maratha empire, replacing the city’s previous association with Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.
Aurangabad railway station, established in 1900 during the rule of the 7th Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan, serves as a key transport hub.
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar has emerged as a major tourist destination, as it is surrounded by historical landmarks such as the Ajanta and Ellora Caves, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
