The Bhopal Metro marked a significant milestone on Tuesday (4 March) with a successful trial run from Rani Kamlapati Railway Station to AIIMS Bhopal, according to a report by The Times of India.

Overseen by the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL), the test run utilised the newly constructed Railway Over Bridge (RoB), a critical infrastructure component connecting AIIMS Bhopal to Habibganj.

The metro train, comprising three coaches, traversed the route at a controlled speed of 10 to 20 km per hour, covering DRM Office and Alkapuri stations.

This marks the first time the metro has extended beyond Habibganj, where previous trials were limited in 2023. With the RoB now complete, the metro can directly link Rani Kamlapati station to AIIMS Bhopal, significantly enhancing connectivity.

Future trials will progressively increase the train’s speed to its maximum design capacity of 90 km per hour.

The train, with each coach measuring approximately 22 metres in length and 2.9 metres in width, performed as expected during the initial test.

MPMRCL’s Managing Director, Krishna Chaitanya, expressed his satisfaction with the progress and directed officials to expedite the remaining work to ensure a seamless transition to passenger operations.

MPMRCL has outlined plans to commence metro services in Bhopal by mid-2025, focusing first on the priority corridor between Subhash Nagar Depot and AIIMS Bhopal.

Before full-fledged operations begin, the metro will undergo a series of safety trials and obtain necessary certifications. These standard procedures are essential to guarantee the safety and efficiency of the system before it opens to the public.
