The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is launching a 10-day Tiranga Yatra starting Tuesday (13 May), to pay tribute to the Indian armed forces and highlight the success of Operation Sindoor, a recent military action against terror camps and military sites in Pakistan following the Pahalgam attack.
Scheduled to run until 23 May, the yatra aims to ignite a wave of patriotism and national unity across the country. Events will include bike rallies, public gatherings, flag-hoisting ceremonies, and outreach activities in towns and cities nationwide, NDTV reported.
The initiative, which begins at 4 pm on Tuesday, focuses on showcasing the bravery of the armed forces while connecting with citizens beyond political lines. Senior BJP leaders, including J P Nadda, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and others, are leading the planning and coordination of the campaign.
“This is about uniting the people behind the bravery of our armed forces, not political point-scoring,” a BJP official stated, emphasising the non-partisan spirit of the yatra.
"The patriotic fervour at this easternmost frontier rekindled our love for the nation and strengthened our collective resolve to stand in unwavering support of our brave defence forces,” Arunachal Chief Minister Prema Khandu posted on X after joining Tiranga Yatra.
However, this is not the BJP’s first tricolour-led initiative. The Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, was launched in 2022 during the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
In 2011, Anurag Thakur, then head of the BJP’s youth wing, led a yatra to hoist the national flag in Srinagar, an act for which he was jailed.
Going further back, in 1991, BJP president Murli Manohar Joshi, with Narendra Modi by his side, hoisted the flag at Lal Chowk in Srinagar as part of a similar unity campaign.
