BJP MP and chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Communications and Information Technology, Nishikant Dubey, announced that his team will soon summon Meta regarding a controversial statement made by CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
The statement, which claims that incumbent governments, including India’s, were voted out of power in elections around the world post-COVID, has raised concerns.
Dubey expressed his discontent on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “My committee will summon Meta over the false information. Misinformation about any democratic country tarnishes the image of the country. That organisation will have to apologise to the Indian Parliament and the people for this mistake.”
His comments followed the widespread backlash against Zuckerberg’s remarks, which have been labelled as “factually incorrect” by Indian officials.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw was quick to refute Zuckerberg's claim. He highlighted India’s successes, such as providing free food to 800 million citizens and distributing 2.2 billion COVID-19 vaccines.
Vaishnaw also pointed to India’s standing as the fastest-growing major economy, emphasising that Prime Minister Modi’s decisive third-term victory was a clear testament to good governance and public trust.
This controversy has sparked significant political debate, with the government now pushing for accountability from Meta and Zuckerberg, calling for an apology to the Indian people and Parliament.
