After announcing 70 district presidents, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to elect its Uttar Pradesh state president. Amidst rigorous deliberations at the state and central levels, a number of potential candidates have surfaced for this pivotal role.
Despite numerous discussions held in Lucknow and Delhi, the BJP postponed the declaration of district presidents, finally unveiling the identities of 70 out of 98. Even though 28 are yet to be identified, the number disclosed thus far is enough to proceed with the election of the new state BJP chief.
This is because as per the party constitution, a minimum of 50 per cent of the total district presidents are required to complete the process of electing the state president, The New Indian Express reported.
Key contenders for the prime position include Swatantra Dev Singh, a notable OBC leader who currently serves as the Jal Shakti Minister in Yogi Adityanath's cabinet and had earlier also served as UP BJP chief.
BL Verma, a minister in the Modi government representing the Lodh community, is also in the running. Amar Pal Maurya, a Rajya Sabha MP and state general secretary from the OBC category, is another potential candidate.
Dinesh Sharma, a former Deputy CM and Rajya Sabha MP from the Brahmin community, and Laxmi Kant Bajpai, a Rajya Sabha member and former UP BJP president who is also a Brahmin leader, are also in the fray.
At present, Bhupendra Chaudhary, a notable Jat leader from Moradabad in western Uttar Pradesh, heads the BJP's state unit. Despite this, those within the party are not dismissing the chance that the BJP may keep him in his position because of his close ties with the central leadership.
“In either case, the party will weigh the pros and cons related to caste and regional dynamics while electing the new state BJP chief, who will have the responsibility of securing victory for the party in the crucial 2027 assembly elections and the civic polls thereafter,” a senior BJP leader was quoted as saying.
