BJP Tamil Nadu president K Annamalai announced on Thursday (26 December) that he would abstain from wearing footwear until the DMK government is ousted from power.
Speaking to reporters in Coimbatore, Annamalai criticised the state police for their handling of the Anna University sexual assault case and the alleged mishandling of sensitive information.
“How did the FIR enter the public domain? You have revealed the identity of the victim by leaking the FIR. The FIR also shows the victim in a poor light. The police and the DMK should be ashamed for writing such an FIR and leaking it,’’ he said, targeting law minister S Regupathy.
Annamalai also questioned the lack of safety measures on the Anna University campus. “Where did the Nirbhaya fund go? Why was there no CCTV camera on the Anna University campus?” he asked.
As a form of protest, Annamalai stated that he would whip himself six times in front of his house on Friday morning.
“I am going to whip myself six times in front of my house at 10 am tomorrow. I will not wear footwear until the DMK govt is ousted from power,’’ he declared, while clarifying that he would not compel BJP cadres to follow his example.
He criticised Law Minister Regupathy for alleging that Tamil Nadu had been peaceful until Annamalai returned from London.
“I am tired of this kind of politics and want to end the ‘dirty politics’ in TN,” he said.
Annamalai announced a 48-day fast and plans to visit all six Arupadai Veedu (abodes of Lord Muruga) in February to “complain to Murugan about the situation in TN.”
He argued that the indecent behavior of DMK leaders necessitated a similar political approach from his side.
“Why should we have debate, respect, and healthy politics in TN where there is no safety for women?’’ he asked.
Calling the DMK an “evil force,” Annamalai urged the middle class to rise and question the government.
He demanded the sacking of the Chennai city police commissioner or at least the deputy commissioner over the Anna University case.
“No more public protests, because you simply arrest all the BJP cadres who gather for the protest and lodge them in a marriage hall. So, from tomorrow onwards cadres will hold protests in front of their houses,’’ he said.
