The ambitious Rs 566.6 crore project to redevelop Chennai’s Broadway into a high-density, transit-oriented urban hub has made progress after the tender was officially awarded to Bridge and Roof Company (India) Ltd.
This landmark initiative under Chennai Metro Asset Management Limited (CMAML), aims to blend heritage renewal with cutting-edge transit infrastructure, The New Indian Express reported.
CMAML, a joint venture between Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO), is executing the project on behalf of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC).
The redevelopment centres around the construction of a multimodal facility complex (MMFC) and the full revamp of the iconic Kuralagam building.
The MMFC and bus terminal are scheduled for completion within 24 months, while the construction of the commercial towers and the nine-storey Kuralagam building is set to conclude in 30 months.
The complex will span a built-up area of 1.1 lakh square metres, with Kuralagam building covering 22,794 square metres. Retail shops will occupy the lower levels, while offices are planned above.
The first basement of both buildings will serve as a concourse for both passengers and shoppers.
With a capacity to manage 3,250 peak-hour passengers, the terminal will house 73 bus bays distributed across three levels.
Supporting infrastructure includes subways, foot overbridges, internal walkways, and stack-parking for 433 cars and 1,174 two-wheelers. Provision has also been made for 30 lifts, 27 escalators, and EV charging stations.
