Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced plans on Sunday (8 December) for the establishment of a comprehensive anti-drone unit to combat the rising use of unmanned aerial vehicles for smuggling weapons and drugs across the western borders with Pakistan.

Speaking at the 60th Raising Day event of the Border Security Force (BSF) in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, Shah revealed that a newly developed "laser-equipped anti-drone gun-mounted" mechanism has shown promising results.

Drone neutralisation and detection rates along the India-Pakistan border in Punjab have increased from 3 per cent to 55 per cent, he said. "The drone threat is likely to intensify in the future," Shah warned.

"We are addressing this challenge through a collaborative effort involving defence and research organizations, including the DRDO. A specialised anti-drone unit will be operational soon," the Home Minister added.

Government data indicates that over 260 drones have been intercepted or recovered along the Pakistan border in 2024, compared to 110 in 2023, with most incidents occurring in Punjab.

During the event, Shah inspected a ceremonial parade, awarded gallantry medals, and highlighted the BSF’s critical role in safeguarding India's borders. Established on December 1, 1965, the BSF comprises 2.65 lakh personnel and is tasked with securing over 6,300 km of frontiers with Pakistan and Bangladesh while supporting internal security efforts.

Shah also addressed the progress of the Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS), which enhances security along India's borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh. He noted the system’s positive impact on riverine areas in Assam's Dhubri but acknowledged the need for further improvements.

The Home Minister emphasised the government’s commitment to border infrastructure, highlighting increased funding for fencing, roads, and other logistical developments. He also mentioned the Vibrant Village Programme, aimed at integrating and developing frontier villages across northern borders.

BSF Director General Daljit Singh Chawdhary reported that 13,226 newly trained personnel have been deployed to strengthen the force's operational capacity. An additional 4,000 recruits are undergoing training, and approximately 12,000 more will begin their training next month.

Shah concluded by underlining the importance of security personnel in achieving India’s global aspirations. "Reaching the pinnacle of global recognition by 2047 is impossible without the dedication of the jawans guarding our borders," he stated.
