Centre Appoints Daljit Singh Chawdhary As Acting BSF DG Day After Removing Nitin Agrawal, His Deputy Khurania

The Centre has appointed Daljit Singh Chawdhary, the current Director General of the Sahastra Seema Bal (SSB), as the acting Director General of the Border Security Force (BSF) a day after the repatriation of Nitin Agrawal to his state cadre.

This arrangement will continue until a permanent replacement is appointed or further orders are issued.

On Friday (2 August), the Centre had removed Nitin Agrawal and his deputy, Special DG (West) Y B Khurania, repatriating them back to their state cadres with immediate effect.

This decision came amid a notable increase in terrorist activities and infiltration attempts in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the Jammu area.

According to data, up until 21 July this year, 14 civilians and 14 security personnel have lost their lives, with 24 counter-terror operations and 11 terror-related incidents reported in the Union Territory.

In an order issued on Saturday (3 August), Home Ministry under-secretary Sanjeev Kumar said, “Premature repatriation of Agarwal to his parent cadre with immediate effect. Assignment of Additional Charge of the post of DG (BSF) to DG (SSB) Chawdhary upon repatriation of Agarwal till the appointment of a regular incumbent or until further orders, whichever is earlier," Indian Express reported.

Nitin Agrawal, a Kerala cadre officer from the 1989 batch, assumed the role of BSF chief in June last year and is set to retire in 2026.

The decision to remove him was made several days ago, with the Ministry of Home Affairs sending a proposal letter to the relevant department on 30 July.

The BSF is responsible for securing around 2,290 km of the India's international border along Jammu, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat on India's western front.

The Jammu region, in particular, is vulnerable to infiltration attempt by Pakistan-based terror group with cross-border tunnels, dense forests and rugged terrain providing favourable conditions for terrorists to carry out attacks on civilians and security personnel.
