The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has allocated Rs 19,338 crore for National Highway (NH) projects in the North Eastern Region (NER) for the financial year 2024-25.
A total of 190 projects spanning 3,856 km with a sanctioned cost of Rs 81,540 crore are under construction in the region and are slated for completion by September 2028.
Allocation is made state-wise and year-wise for all National Highway works, with the total allocation for NH works in the North Eastern Region during Financial Year 2024-25 being Rs 19,338 crore.
Efforts to expedite project completion include streamlined land acquisition, revamped dispute resolution mechanisms, and ensuring clearances are in place before project initiation.
Additional measures involve close coordination with state governments, regular reviews, and proactive identification of potential issues during the Network Planning Group appraisal.
NH projects in the region are executed by state Public Works Departments (PWDs), the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL), the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).
Compared to the rest of the country, NHIDCL is constructing the highest number of NH works in the NE region.
As of 31 October 2024, NHIDCL is overseeing significant projects across Northeastern states, including 1,012 km in Assam, 819 km in Manipur, 737 km in Mizoram, and 487 km in Nagaland.
Completed stretches include 471 km in Arunachal Pradesh, 310 km in Assam, and 346 km in Tripura, among others.
