The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly witnessed chaos for the third day in a row on Friday (8 November) over the controversial resolution seeking restoration of special status to J&K.

The assembly session is marked by vocal arguments, physical scuffles, and a walkout by the BJP, after several party members entered the well of the house and were subsequently escorted out by marshals.

The ruckus began on Wednesday following the introduction of a new resolution by the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC), advocating for the restoration of the region's special status.

The BJP strongly opposed the resolution, calling it "illegal" and demanding its withdrawal, NDTV reported.

However, Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather rejected BJP's demand, saying that the House itself, not the Speaker, held the authority to reverse any resolution passed.

During a speech by BJP's Leader of Opposition, Sunil Sharma, Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) leader Sheikh Khursheed entered the assembly well, holding a banner demanding the restoration of Articles 370 and 35A.

BJP legislators swiftly reacted by seizing and tearing the banner, sparking a brief altercation in which People's Conference MLA Sajad Lone sided with Khursheed.

This commotion led to a 15-minute adjournment of the session.

When the session resumed, BJP members continued their protest, disregarding the Speaker’s calls for order.

"Do not force me to take actions I do not wish to take," he warned, as BJP members persisted in chanting slogans honouring Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee.
