Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has opened a new Operations Training Centre at its Koyambedu Depot to enhance staff training as the city's metro network continues to expand.
The facility, inaugurated on Friday (4 July) by CMRL Managing Director M A Siddique, features smart classrooms with a 100-seat capacity, a Computer-Based Training (CBT) lab with 26 workstations, and a 20-seat meeting room, according to a CMRL statement.
It is designed to centralise training operations and upgrade existing infrastructure with modern teaching tools.
Senior officials, including Directors Manoj Goyal (Systems and Operations) and S Krishnamoorthy (Finance), were present at the event.
According to a statement by CMRL, the new centre will be used to train operational staff in areas such as safety procedures, customer service, and the use of new technologies.
The metro operator currently runs around 50 kilometres of network across two corridors, with extensions and new phases underway.
The new centre is expected to streamline the training process and support a growing workforce as the network scales up.
The training centre comes at a time when CMRL is preparing for the next phase of expansion under Chennai Metro Phase 2, which will add over 100 kilometres to the system.
The Phase I of Chennai Metro Rail project covers a length of 45.046 km network and consists of two Corridors — Corridor-I From Washermenpet to Airport (23.085 Km), Corridor -2 From Chennai Central to St Thomas Mount (21.961 km).
About 55 per cent of the Corridors in Phase I is Underground and the remaining are Elevated.
The extension of Phase I covers a length of 9.05 Km from Washermenpet to Wimco Nagar.
The Chennai Metro Phase II expansion has been planned for a length of 118.9 Km network with 128 stations. It consists of three Corridors —Corridor-3 From Madhavaram to SIPCOT (45.8 Km), Corridor-4 From Lighthouse to Poonamalle Bypass (26.1 Km), Corridor-5 From Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (47.0 Km).
