Commuters along the IT corridor in Chennai may soon enjoy a smoother journey, as the phase II extension of Chennai Metro Rail along the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) gears up for completion in the next two years, The Hindu reported.

A key highlight of this stretch will be the Sholinganallur station, envisioned as a major interchange linking multiple parts of the city.

The Sholinganallur station is being constructed with a unique, multi-tiered design.

“Corridor 5 platform will be constructed at the maximum height here at 28.8 metres from the road; below that, corridor 3 platform will come up at 21.8 metres. At the plaza, we are planning a mini leisure and activity centre like the Kathipara Urban Square,” T Archunan, director (projects), Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) was quoted as saying.

The station will feature a perpendicular, plus-shaped layout, allowing seamless transfers between Corridor 3 (Madhavaram–SIPCOT) and Corridor 5 (Madhavaram–Sholinganallur).

Trains from Corridor 5 will curve through the fifth floor of an adjoining eight-storey building before arriving at the Corridor 3 platform.

The building itself will offer parking on the first floor, while the upper floors are earmarked for offices or retail, though boarding will not be allowed from the structure.

A grade separator will rise along the second level, while the first level will host a plaza for leisure and commercial activities.

Nearby, the Thoraipakkam station will mirror Sholinganallur’s multi-level design, including a plaza, grade separator, and corridor 3 platform.

However, passengers will be able to switch between Corridor 3 and Corridor 5 only at Sholinganallur, making it the pivotal hub for transfers along this stretch.
