China's Ministry of State Security (MSS) has detained a foreign national, identified only as Huang, who served as the head of an overseas consulting firm, for alleged spying on behalf of the United Kingdom.
The MSS accused Huang of working with Britain's MI6 since 2015, directing multiple visits to China to gather intelligence and identify potential assets.
However, the MSS did not disclose Huang's full name, gender, or nationality, nor did it reveal the consulting firm involved.
According to the MSS statement, MI6 provided Huang with training and professional spying equipment in exchange for intelligence and communications.
As reported by Economic Times, Huang allegedly provided Britain with 17 pieces of intelligence, including "national secrets".
During the investigation, he was granted consular visits from their home country in accordance with the law, the MSS reported.
This development follows China's months-long crackdown on international consulting firms.
In May last year, the state security authorities raided offices of Capvision and closed the Beijing office of Mintz Group, part of broader efforts to increase oversight of sensitive information related to national security.
The MSS, traditionally low-profile, has recently expanded communications, including launching a WeChat account, urging the public to join the fight against foreign spies.
The agency's increased visibility aligns with the passage of a counter-espionage law in July, causing concerns among businesses about higher legal risks.
