Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal has emphasised the need for self-sustainability in India’s clean energy sector, cautioning against over-reliance on subsidies and Product Linked Incentives (PLIs).
Goyal highlighted that the Product Linked Incentives (PLIs) and subsidies are detrimental to long-term growth and development of the clean energy sector.
Speaking at the Bharat Climate Forum 2025 in New Delhi on Friday (10 January), Goyal stated that the PLI scheme can only help kickstart the sector, but the clean energy sector must strive to become self-sustaining.
The Cleantech sector must become independent of the Government, he added, according to a Commerce Ministry statement.
During the event, Goyal also unveiled the Bharat Cleantech Manufacturing Platform, an initiative designed to enhance India's clean technology value chains in the solar, wind, hydrogen, and battery storage sectors.
Goyal urged industry participants to think innovatively, and increase manufacturing scale in the country.
He said that the launch of the Bharat Cleantech Manufacturing Platform will provide an opportunity for the Indian firms to collaborate, to co-innovate and will help provide a platform for financing, to share ideas, technologies and resources.
This will help India become an attractive business case and a global leader in the sustainability and cleantech sector, he added.
Goyal expressed confidence that the forum’s participants could meet the ambitious target set by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to establish 500 GW of clean energy capacity by 2030.
Highlighting India’s accomplishments, he stated that the country has been among the best performers in achieving its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement, achieving its clean energy goals for 2022 eight years ahead of schedule.
With 200 GW of clean energy capacity already installed, he affirmed India’s readiness to meet the 500 GW target.
