The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has awarded consultancy contracts to prepare Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for two proposed corridors — the 7 km Extension of Corridor 4 from Lighthouse to High Court and the 21 km Tambaram–Guindy–Velachery link.
The Corridor 4 extension will run along Marina Beach, improving connectivity to the Secretariat and surrounding areas.
It is expected to benefit daily commuters as well as tourists by easing access to one of Chennai’s busiest stretches.
The Tambaram–Guindy–Velachery corridor will connect the southern suburbs, including Medavakkam and Pallikaranai, with Corridor 1 at Guindy.
Planned multimodal integration at Tambaram, Medavakkam, Velachery, and Guindy will strengthen first-and-last-mile connectivity across the network.
M/s Systra MVA Consulting India Pvt Ltd has been appointed as the consultant for both projects, tasked with completing the DPRs within 120 days.
The reports will evaluate alignment options, ridership potential, integration with other transport modes, and technical feasibility.
These corridors form part of CMRL’s broader push to expand its network well beyond the 118.9 km Phase II project currently under construction.
The city is also studying potential Phase III routes, targeting underserved areas, improving airport access, and connecting emerging growth hubs.
