A corruption case has been lodged against Dr Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where a 31-year-old post-graduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered.

The former principal has already been questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the trainee doctor case about the delay in letting parents see the body of the victim and other lapses.

Now, the West Bengal police are investigating financial irregularities at the state-run hospital. A complaint in this regard was registered in June.

The state government intensified the investigation by establishing a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to thoroughly examine the allegations surrounding RG Kar Medical College and Hospital since 2021.

Led by Inspector General Pranab Kumar, the SIT includes senior officials such as Deputy Inspector General Syed Waquar Raza, CID DIG Soma Mitra Das, and Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner Indira Mukherjee.

Notably, Ghosh had stepped down a couple of days after the brutal crime that happened under his watch but was appointed as the head of another medical college hours later, sparking controversy.

Now, the SIT will probe financial misconduct during Ghosh's tenure as the principal. A few other media reports have also raised suspicions of organ trafficking happening at the college.

Meanwhile, taking suo moto cognizance of the trainee doctor's case, a Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud and comprising Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra is set to hear the matter.
