NDA nominee CP Radhakrishnan has been elected as the new Vice-President of India.

Radhakrishnan won the election with 452 first-preference votes, defeating the opposition candidate, B Sudershan Reddy, a former judge of the Supreme Court, who polled 300 votes. The results were announced by Returning Officer PC Mody.

Radhakrishnan, a former Governor of Maharashtra and Jharkhand, secured a clear majority with the support of BJP MPs and allies.

Brisk voting took place on Tuesday (9 September) to elect the new Vice-President, with over 98 per cent of MPs casting their ballot, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was the first to exercise his franchise. He was accompanied by Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Jitendra Singh and L Murugan.

Polling for the vice-president election, in which members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were eligible to vote, began at 10 am in the new Parliament building and continued till 5 pm. Counting of votes began at 6 pm.

Three parties, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) of Odisha, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) of Punjab, and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) of Telangana, had declared their intent to abstain from the polls. Their declaration, however, made little difference to the poll arithmetic.
