Construction of the Dehradun-Mussoorie ropeway project is progressing rapidly, with work initiated on 20 out of the proposed 26 towers, Dainik Jagran reported.

Steel binding has begun at the upper terminal near Gandhi Chowk in Mussoorie, following land leveling.

Roadwork is underway to connect the ropeway to the Gandhi Chowk.

At the lower terminal in Purkul, three towers have already been constructed, and the foundation work is complete.

A three-storey parking structure is ready, and work on the fourth floor is set to begin shortly.

According to the State Tourism Department, the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

The ropeway, which will stretch 5.5 km between Dehradun’s Purkul village and Mussoorie’s Gandhi Chowk, aims to drastically reduce travel time to just 15 minutes—compared to the current 1.5-hour road journey over 33 km.

The system will be capable of transporting 1,300 tourists one way at a time, with an operational speed of up to 6 meters per second.

Built with safety in mind, it will include an automatic rescue mode that slows the ropeway during adverse weather.

Ropes and cabins are being imported from France, with an initial fleet of 55 automatic-door cabins, each seating 10 passengers.

The number of cabins will later increase to 71.

A French technical team will also train local operators. The ropeway will be controlled through a fully online system.

This project gains significance as May to July sees over 25,000 tourists travel daily to Mussoorie, causing traffic congestion and road jams.

The ropeway is expected to reduce this pressure significantly, while also mitigating risks from landslides during the monsoon that often lead to road closures.

Conceived in 2024 by the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Council at a cost of Rs 300 crore under a public-private partnership with Mussoorie Skycar Company, the ropeway is projected to be operational by the end of 2026.
