In a bid to address chronic traffic congestion in South Delhi, the Union Territory's (UT) government has outlined plans for four elevated road projects.
According to a Times of India report, the Public Works Department (PWD) has been tasked with preparing feasibility reports to determine the viability of the stretches.
The proposed routes include a link between the main Chhatarpur Road and SSN Marg; an elevated stretch from Chhatarpur’s 100-Foot Road to the IGNOU Gate; another along IGNOU Road; and a longer corridor from Anuvrat Marg to Indira Gandhi International Airport via INA Market.
Senior officials highlighted that residents of several neighbourhoods, including Freedom Fighters Enclave and Sainik Farm, have long endured poor connectivity owing to persistent jams on IGNOU Road.
With buildings and shops flanking both sides, widening the road is not an option. Earlier attempts to ease congestion by placing concrete barriers to separate lanes failed to deliver lasting relief.
IGNOU Road remains a vital arterial link, connecting residential areas such as Neb Sarai, Paryavaran Complex, Saidulajab and Freedom Fighters Enclave to the Saket metro station and Mehrauli-Badarpur Road.
However, encroachments by shopkeepers and hawkers have further squeezed available road space. The T-point at IGNOU Road–MB Road and the Ambedkar Nagar depot crossing continue to witness regular bottlenecks.
One major proposal is a 2 km elevated road connecting Chhatarpur’s 100-Foot Road to IGNOU, expected to ease pressure on routes towards Gurgaon and Qutub Minar.
Another plan involves a flyover at the Chhatarpur Road–SSN Marg junction. The most ambitious project, from Anuvrat Marg to IGI Airport, remains in its preliminary stage.
“These are preliminary observations. A final decision requires a detailed feasibility study by a consultant,” an official was quoted as saying, adding that site inspections will involve PWD engineers, local MLAs, Delhi Traffic Police and other stakeholders.
