The Delhi government on Friday (6 June) disbursed over Rs 833 crore to the city's three civic bodies for development initiatives and municipal functions.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) received Rs 820 crore, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) Rs 8 crore, and the Delhi Cantonment Board Rs 5.5 crore, reported Times of India.

An allocation of Rs 50.8 crore was directed towards biomining operations at Delhi’s three landfill sites — Okhla, Bhalswa, and Ghazipur as part of the first instalment of the basic tax assignment for the 2025–26 fiscal year.

MCD officials said the funds would significantly accelerate waste remediation efforts, with Rs 20.3 crore earmarked for Okhla, Rs 20.8 crore for Bhalswa, and Rs 9.7 crore for Ghazipur.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to strengthening local bodies, stating, "Our aim is to transform Delhi into a modern and developed capital, and local bodies play a key role in that journey."

MCD Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh described the release as a "substantial allocation" aligned with the recommendations of the Fifth Delhi Finance Commission.

He added, “This will play a vital role in strengthening the corporation's financial position and supporting various public services across the capital.”

The grant is untied, allowing civic bodies to utilise the funds as needed, unlike tied grants which are restricted to specific sectors.

The MCD said this timely disbursement would help settle outstanding dues and support improvements in infrastructure, sanitation, and local governance.

"BJP-led govt in MCD will make Delhi a cleaner, greener and most developed city," Singh asserted.
