Delhi has seen a dramatic leap in its electric bus network, expanding from just 400 vehicles in February to 3,400 today, with projections suggesting the figure will reach nearly 8,000 by February next year.
By the end of 2025, the capital expects to operate close to 6,000 electric buses, according to transport minister Pankaj Kumar Singh.
Speaking at the India Clean Transportation Summit 2025 in New Delhi, Singh said the rapid growth of the fleet marked a major step in the capital’s transition towards sustainable mobility, reported Hindustan Times.
“As per our estimates, Delhi requires between 7,000 to 8,000 buses based on the ongoing route rationalisation. We should be able to reach that by February. The number has grown rapidly from 400 buses when I took charge to 3,400 now. This includes our successful ‘Devi’ buses, which are popular among commuters and helping solve last-mile connectivity problems,” he was quoted as saying.
The minister confirmed that Delhi’s new Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0 will be released around the same time, with a strong focus on charging infrastructure, scrappage of older vehicles, and incentives to encourage wider adoption.
“Adequate charging infrastructure will be the backbone of Delhi’s new EV policy. We aim to bring the policy out by February, or even earlier. Our focus is on EV infrastructure in housing societies, under flyovers, and on vacant land in outer Delhi,” Singh said, adding that RWAs and private partners would play a key role.
The summit, hosted by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) with Norway as the partner country, also saw Oslo officials share lessons from their EV journey.
