The Centre is reportedly planning to expand Delhi’s Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), also called the city’s third Ring Road, with a major eastern arm to ease traffic congestion, reported Hindustan Times.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans a new six-lane highway starting at Alipur in North Delhi and passing through Tronica City in Ghaziabad.

It will link the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway near Mandaula, then continue through Ghitora and Farukhnagar to connect with the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, ending along the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway.

The extension will relieve traffic pressure on the Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, Kalindi Kunj, and Sarai Kale Khan by channeling traffic through northeast Delhi into Ghaziabad and Noida.

“The goal is to decongest Delhi by creating alternative corridors that allow intercity and freight traffic to avoid the city centre,” an official was quoted as saying by HT.

NHAI’s project report estimates the first 17-km leg will cost Rs 3,350 crore, linking Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) with the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway.

A proposed second leg, about 65 km long and costing Rs 7,500 crore, will run from Mandaula to Noida via Ghaziabad, bypassing towns such as Ghitora, Farukhnagar, Hidan, and Indirapuram.

“The second leg will act as a high-speed bypass for vehicles travelling between Ghaziabad and Noida and parts of Delhi, reducing traffic on corridors such as Kalindi Kunj, Sarai Kale Khan and Delhi-Meerut Expressway,” the report noted.

Together, both sections will span 82 km at around Rs 10,850 crore. Bids for detailed project reports are under evaluation and are likely to be awarded soon.

According to Officials cited in the report, this expansion complements the main UER-II, set to be fully operational by August.
