Around 1.5 lakh booth-level agents (BLAs) have been appointed by political parties in Bihar ahead of the state’s electoral roll revision, with 51,964 appointed by the BJP alone, according to Election Commission reports cited by The Indian Express on Sunday (29 June).
The high numbers signal active political mobilisation ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, due in October–November. Of the total 1.54 lakh BLAs registered so far, RJD has 47,143, JD(U) has 27,931 and Congress has 8,586. Parties are allowed to appoint one BLA per booth to assist Booth Level Officers (BLOs) in the revision process.
The Election Commission launched a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) drive on 24 June. Bihar currently has 77,895 booths, with 20,603 new booths being added. This time, the EC is preparing the electoral rolls afresh rather than through annual or pre-poll summary revisions.
All 7.89 crore registered voters must submit enumeration forms by 25 July. An additional 2.93 crore voters, who were not on the rolls as of 1 January 2003, must also provide documents proving residence and citizenship, the EC has said.
