In a significant move to ease South Mumbai’s chronic traffic woes, an elevated road has been proposed to link Parel with Haji Ali, offering relief to commuters navigating congested routes through Dadar, Mahim, and Matunga, according to a Free Press Journal report.

The proposed 15 km, six-lane viaduct will originate near the Mumbai Coastal Road’s entry and exit points at Lala Lajpatrai Road, extending along the periphery of the Mahalaxmi Racecourse and concluding at E Moses Road on Senapati Bapat Marg.

Once operational, the corridor is anticipated to cut travel times by up to 30 minutes during peak hours.

Currently, commuters travelling from Haji Ali towards Dadar endure a circuitous and congested detour via Worli Naka, with traffic funnelled through multiple roads including Annie Besant Road, Pandurang Budhkar Marg, and Keshavrao Khadye Marg.

Similarly, southbound traffic from Dadar and Parel faces lengthy delays navigating the same network of routes.

The elevated road is expected to provide direct connections to important arteries such as Gokhale Road, Lady Jamshed Road, Bhavani Shankar Road, and NM Joshi Marg, facilitating smoother access to major hubs like Siddhivinayak Temple, Shivaji Park, Lower Parel, and Mahim.

Estimated to cost around Rs 300 crore, the project aims to eliminate bottlenecks and ensure efficient east-west connectivity across the city.

Notably, officials have stated that the viaduct’s alignment avoids any need for land acquisition and is planned to be constructed with minimal disruption to current traffic flows.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s office, in collaboration with the Public Works Department, has outlined the initiative, although implementing agencies are yet to be finalised.

“The proposed six-lane elevated corridor, which addresses a critical missing link in the city’s east-west connectivity, will run along the periphery of the Mahalaxmi Racecourse and pass near the NSCI Dome. The project is designed to ensure that no land acquisition is needed and that existing traffic flow will remain unaffected during construction,” an official from the Urban Development Department was quoted as saying.
