Elon Musk has donated to a super political action committee (PAC) working to elect Donald Trump to the White House, marking a bold move by the world's richest person to influence the US political landscape.

Musk has donated to a low-profile group named America PAC.

While the exact amount remains undisclosed, the donation is characterised as a sizeable, Bloomberg reported citing sources.

The PAC is scheduled to reveal its list of donors on 15 July.

This development highlights the growing political influence of Musk, who leads the Bloomberg Billionaires Index with a net worth of $263.6 billion.

Once a self-proclaimed political independent who avoided political involvement, Musk now frequently uses his X social-media platform to share conservative-leaning views and criticise Democrats.

Musk's financial support comes as Trump surpasses his rival, President Joe Biden, in fundraising, aided by affluent Wall Street and corporate donors.

Biden's fundraising efforts have waned following a problematic debate, causing key Democratic donors to withdraw support.

Despite not publicly endorsing a candidate for the 2024 race, Musk’s financial backing positions him as a significant contributor to Republican efforts.

Earlier this year, Musk indicated he did not plan to finance either Trump or Biden's campaigns, but this recent donation suggests a potential shift in his political involvement.

Boosting Trump's Ground Game

America PAC operates mainly behind the scenes to strengthen Trump’s campaign efforts on the ground.

While Federal Election Commission disclosures do not specify the locations of these activities, they are focused on key battleground states.

Musk's involvement could critically impact Biden and the Democrats, who are already dealing with internal disputes regarding the president's political future.

Democrats have heavily invested in field offices and staff in swing states, efforts frequently highlighted by Biden.

A super PAC supporting Trump’s campaign provides Republicans with a significant financial edge, allowing them to allocate official campaign funds elsewhere.

This election is expected to be the most expensive in US history.

Among external groups supporting Trump, America PAC is the leading spender on direct voter engagement, having spent $15.8 million to date, with $13.1 million allocated to field operations, according to federal records.

The PAC also funds digital media, texting, and phone campaigns to reach voters.

The group prioritises door-to-door persuasion and voter mobilisation efforts.

A recent Federal Election Commission ruling permits super PACs to coordinate with campaigns on voter outreach initiatives.

America PAC has engaged In Field Strategies, a national grassroots firm that has also worked with the Republican National Committee.

Corporate Implications

Musk’s political contributions enhance his influence in Washington. His wealth is primarily derived from his stakes in Tesla Inc., SpaceX, and X.

His companies frequently secure significant government contracts and often clash with federal agencies over regulations.

Some of Trump's proposed policies, such as dismantling Biden’s electric vehicle initiatives and imposing tariffs on Chinese EV manufacturers, would directly impact Tesla.

Despite past conflicts, Musk and Trump have developed a closer relationship, with Musk advising Trump on electric vehicle and cryptocurrency policies.

During Tesla’s annual meeting last month, Musk commented on his rapport with Trump, stating, "He does call me out of the blue for no reason."
