Indian Railways has ferried more than 1.5 crore passengers so far through trains in festival season and the number is expected to exceed 2.5 crore by the end of the festive period, the Ministry of Railways said in a statement on Saturday (25 October).
The ministry said that 30 major stations in Bihar and nearby areas in UP have been equipped with large holding areas to ensure smoother crowd management.
In recent years, significant investment in railway infrastructure has led to remarkable progress, according to the ministry.
The number of special trains, which were only a few hundred earlier, has now risen to a "record-breaking" number, it added.
Track construction has also increased significantly, from just 400–600 km per year about a decade back to over 4,000 km per year today.
Highlighting the efforts during the festive season, the ministry said railway staff are working round the clock to assist passengers and maintain order so that everyone can reach home safely for the festivals.
"With Chhath Puja ongoing, Railways has further strengthened arrangements to handle the peak travel period. Stations in Bihar are preparing for the festive rush with holding areas, extra ticket counters, CCTV monitoring, and other facilities to enhance passenger convenience," the ministry said.
At Patna Railway Station, a dedicated holding area has been set up for passengers’ convenience during the festive season.
To ensure safety and security, round-the-clock monitoring is being carried out through CCTV surveillance, according to the ministry.
Further, a dedicated holding area has been set up at Danapur Railway Station for passengers’ convenience, ensuring all essential amenities are available.
The Railways has also kept ambulances and medical teams on standby 24×7 to handle any emergencies.
At Rajendra Nagar Terminal railway station in Patna, dedicated railway staff assisted passengers requiring help, ensuring they have a safe, comfortable, and pleasant journey during the Chhath festival.
During the Chhath festival, a special Vande Bharat Express is running between New Delhi and Patna.
In this first-of-its-kind initiative, Indian Railways today played the tunes of several traditional Chhath melodies, enhancing the excitement of passengers traveling home for Chhath, the ministry said.
