Former Bangladeshi Cricketer And Awami League MP Mashrafe Mortaza's House Set On Fire By Protesters

Protesters have reportedly set on fire the house of former Bangladesh cricket captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza amid the ongoing violence in the country after after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the nation on Monday (5 August).

Mashrafe Bin Mortaza is a Member of Parliament from Narail-2 constituency in Khulna division.

He won the seat for the second consecutive time as an Awami League candidate during the general elections held in Bangladesh earlier this year.

According to local media reports, protesters vandalised and set fire to the house of Mashrafe Bin Mortaza after Sheikh Hasina's resignation.

Mortaza led Bangladesh in 117 matches across formats - the most for his country.

He took 390 international wickets and scored 2,955 runs in 36 Tests, 220 ODIs, and 54 T20Is during his long cricketing career.

In 2021, Mortaza had condemned the attacks against the minority Hindu community in the country.

In a Facebook post written in Bangla at that time, Mashrafe Mortaza said that Bangladesh suffered two losses -- one at the hands of Scotland in qualifiers of T20 World Cup, and the other one at home, referring to communal violence in Rangpur district in which 20 homes of Hindus were torched by an Islamist mob.
