Former Chief Minister of Punjab and Lok Sabha MP from Jalandhar, Charanjit Singh Channi defended jailed MP Amritpal Singh in the Parliament on Thursday (25 July).

While attacking the Narendra Modi government, the Congress leader said, "This is an emergency that a person elected by 20 lakh people is put into jail under National Security Act (NSA)."

The Jalandhar MP was referring to Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, who was elected as an Independent to the Lok Sabha while being in jail at Assam's Dibrugarh.

Singh came out on parole to take oath as the Lok Sabha MP earlier this month. Even after taking the oath, he asserted that he dreams of a Khalsa state and there is nothing wrong with it.

He is the head of Waris Punjab De and was arrested when the Punjab Police initiated a crackdown on the pro-Khalistan outfit. He took over after Deep Sidhu's death and was arrested last year.

Attacking Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ravneet Singh Bittu at the end of his address in Lok Sabha, Channi said, "Your father was martyred but he died when you left the Congress."

Former Ludhiana MP Bittu joined the BJP in March this year. The Union Minister of State is the grandson of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, who was assassinated by Khalistanis.

Responding to Channi, Bittu said, "My grandfather sacrificed his life for the country, not for the Congress. This Channi is the richest and most corrupt man of Punjab. He is also accused in #MeToo case."
