Gadkari Orders QR Codes On Highways To Hold Builders And Officials Accountable

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has directed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and highway builders to install hoardings with QR codes along national highways so that the public can identify who is responsible for each stretch of road, The Times of India reported.

“Main kyu gaali khaun? The QR code will have information of the contractor, consultant, and officers who cleared the road,” Gadkari said, adding that the move would ensure accountability and transparency in highway construction.

By scanning the QR codes, travellers can instantly view details such as the names and contact information of the contractors, consultants, and officials responsible for that particular highway stretch.

Gadkari stressed that road quality must match global standards. “If a road is bad and people are complaining about it on social media, take it seriously. From A to Z in road construction, we need ownership, sincerity, and a positive approach. Roads must be good, and they must stay good,” he said.

He emphasised that commuters who pay tolls are entitled to high-quality roads and maintained that poor weather or substandard materials cannot justify inadequate road conditions.

He stressed that any discomfort in the road surface must be rectified, even if it increases costs, as user comfort should remain a top priority.

The minister also called for regular performance audits to identify design and maintenance issues, improve transparency, and reward quality work. “When audits are regular, transparency increases, and excuses decrease. That’s how we should work,” he remarked.

Road Transport Secretary V Umashankar said NHAI and builders have been instructed to upload drone-shot videos of highway projects on YouTube for public viewing and feedback.

Officials said the initiative aims to strengthen accountability and public participation in infrastructure development.

Gadkari added that 25,000 km of highways are being upgraded under a Rs 2 lakh crore plan, while the ministry is promoting precast technology to enhance quality and speed.
