In a major connectivity boost for Uttar Pradesh, the Ganga Expressway is set to be inaugurated by the end of 2025.
The under-construction Ganga Expressway links Meerut in the western Uttar Pradesh and Prayagraj in the eastern UP.
Addressing a gathering after inaugurating the Gorakhpur link expressway on Friday (20 June), UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that the Ganga expressway project will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"The Ganga Expressway is being constructed over a length of approximately 600 kilometres, from Meerut to Prayagraj, with excellent connectivity along the route. By the end of this year, we are set to have it formally inaugurated by our Honourable Prime Minister," CM Yogi said.
It is being developed by Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA).
The 594 km six-lane (expandable to eight) access-controlled expressway aims to reduce travel time between Meerut and Prayagraj from 10–12 hours to about 6–8 hours.
The expressway will begin at Bijauli village on the Meerut-Bulandshahr highway and end near Judapur Dadu village on NH-19 in Prayagraj.
The Ganga Expressway will pass through 518 villages in 12 districts of Uttar Pradesh, including Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli, and Pratapgarh.
The expressway will feature 28 flyovers, 381 underpasses, and 126 small bridges, News18 reported.
Public convenience complexes will be developed at nine different locations along the Ganga Expressway.
The design of the expressway includes a provision for emergency landings of fighter jets and helicopters.
A 3.5 km long runway has been constructed in Shahjahanpur for this purpose, where the IAF conducted landing trials in May.
