Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday (10 July) called on the energy storage sector to curb its reliance on imports from select countries and explore alternative supply sources to strengthen supply chain resilience, news agency PTI reported.
"We must work to prevent distortions. We must reduce our dependency on particular geographies and look at alternative sources of supply, where we can have resilience in our supply chain," Goyal said while addressing the 11th India Energy Storage Week (IESW) 2025.
He called on the sector to adopt newer technologies and strive for self-sufficiency, particularly in light of challenges posed by import restrictions.
He said the industry needs to focus on research and development, along with the creation of innovative products.
His remarks come at a time when key sectors like automobiles are facing disruptions due to China’s export restrictions on rare earth magnets. Similar issues have emerged in fertilisers, where China’s curbs are affecting Indian firms.
Goyal also stressed the need for collaboration among industry players to expand charging and battery-swapping infrastructure, which is essential for accelerating electric vehicle (EV) adoption.
He urged manufacturers to explore opportunities in areas such as critical minerals and semiconductors.
Highlighting the government’s efforts to boost domestic manufacturing, Goyal pointed to significant progress in the renewable energy sector.
He said there has been a remarkable 4,000 per cent increase in India’s installed solar capacity, with the overall renewable energy capacity now standing at 227 GW.
He added that the country’s solar photovoltaic module capacity has grown nearly 38-fold, while solar photovoltaic cell capacity has increased 21-fold.
