The security forces have engaged terrorists in a fierce gunfight in Jammu and Kashmir's Awantipora.

The encounter began after a joint team of Army and J&K police launched an operation in Tral area of South Kashmir.

"Encounter started at Nader and Tral area of Awantipora. Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow, " J&K Police wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

This marks the second major encounter reported in Jammu and Kashmir within a span of just 48 hours.

Earlier on Tuesday (13 May), three terrorists were neutralised in a separate encounter that began in Kulgam and then shifted to the forests in Shopian.

Security forces intercepted the terrorists following an intelligence input.

"On 13 May 2025, based on specific intelligence of a Rashtriyas Rifles Unit, about presence of terrorists in general area Shoekal Keller, Shopian, Indian Army launched a search and destroy Operation. During the operation, terrorists opened heavy fire and fierce firefight ensued, which resulted in elimination of three hardcore terrorists. Operation is in in progress," the Indian Army posted on X.

Security operations have intensified in Jammu and Kashmir since the 22 April Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 innocent people, mostly tourists, were brutally killed by Pakistan-backed terrorists.

In response to the terror attack, India on 7 May launched Operation Sindoor, striking nine terror launchpads in Pakistan and PoJK.

After India's anti-terror strikes, Pakistan attempted to strike Indian military and civilian assets, which was foiled by Indian air defence systems. In response, India struck major Pakistan Air Force (PAF) air bases.

On 10 May, India and Pakistan reached a ceasefire agreement and deciding to halt all military actions on land, air and sea, with effect from 5pm.
