The Rapid Metro in Gurugram, which has recorded a consistent rise in ridership and revenue, is set to come under the control of Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL), according to one Indian Express report.
The Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation Limited (HMRTC) confirmed on Monday that it has initiated the process of transferring operations from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).
The decision followed the 62nd HMRTC Board meeting in Chandigarh, chaired by Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi, who also heads the corporation.
Until the handover is finalised, DMRC and GMRL will jointly manage day-to-day operations and maintenance to ensure uninterrupted services.
Passenger numbers have seen a notable jump, with 62.49 lakh commuters using the system between April and July this year, a 13.59 per cent increase compared with the same period in 2024.
Fare revenues climbed by 11.87 per cent, reflecting greater confidence among users. Officials also reported that operating costs had fallen by 6.33 per cent, improving overall efficiency.
Non-fare earnings have been equally robust. Rental income, marketing rights and advertising together generated Rs 21.11 crore during the four-month period, up from Rs 15.56 crore a year ago.
An e-auction of 22 advertising spots on viaducts and pillars is projected to bring in Rs 58.34 crore annually, with HMRTC’s share expected to exceed Rs 35 crore.
GMRL will also take charge of the under-construction Phase-1 of the Gurgaon Metro.
Meanwhile, the HMRTC Board reviewed progress on several regional transport projects, including the Delhi–Rohtak, Gurugram–Faridabad–Noida/Greater Noida, Delhi–Panipat–Karnal and Delhi–Shahjahanpur–Neemrana–Behror Namo Bharat corridors.
Officials confirmed that detailed project reports (DPRs) are at various stages of preparation or review, with Haryana’s financial commitment for some corridors running into thousands of crores.
