On Monday (3 March), the Haryana Police announced the arrest of an individual related to the murder of 23-year-old Congress worker Himani Narwal, Hindustan Times (HT) reported.
“The accused belonged to a village in the Jhajjar district and he was known to the deceased Himani Narwal. We will produce the man before the court and seek his remand to ascertain the reasons behind the gruesome murder. Prima facie it seems that some grudge took place between the accused and Himani,” a senior police official was quoted as saying by HT.
On 1 March, Narwal's body was discovered within a suitcase close to the Sampla bus stand located on the Rohtak-Delhi highway. Narwal, a resident of Vijay Nagar in Rohtak, was discovered deceased within a suitcase in the Rohtak district on Saturday. According to police reports, there were noticeable signs of injury on her body.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was established by the Haryana Police on Sunday to investigate the murder. A police official, as cited by PTI, stated that four teams from the Rohtak Police were on the hunt for the perpetrators.
The family of Narwal has declared that they will not proceed with her cremation until her murderers are apprehended. Savita, her mother, claimed that her swift ascent in politics had sparked envy among some leaders within her party.
"It could be anyone in the party who was jealous about her rise or it could be anyone else," the mother was quoted as saying by HT, while her son Jatin accompanied her.
Leaders of the Haryana Congress portrayed Narwal as a committed and diligent member of their party, who had previously participated in the Bharat Jodo Yatra, led by Rahul Gandhi. They noted her pursuit of a law degree and her affiliation with the party for close to ten years.
Savita expressed that her daughter devoted her life to the party, often working into the late hours.
"Last time, I talked to her on 27 February. She had said she would be busy with a party programme the next day, but later her phone was found switched off," her mother, who reached Rohtak from Delhi, told PTI.
"We refuse to cremate our daughter until she receives justice," the mother asserted.
She further revealed that her older son was killed several years ago, expressing her sorrow over the fact that she never received justice for this tragedy.
Jatin, the brother of Narwal, revealed that the family was notified about the homicide on Saturday afternoon.
