The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras retained its status as India’s top higher education institution in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, marking the seventh consecutive year it has led the overall category.
The Ministry of Education released the 10th edition of the rankings on Thursday (4 September), reported DD News.
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru was ranked as the best university in the country, with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, and Manipal Academy of Higher Education taking second and third places, respectively.
In the colleges category, Hindu College, Delhi, maintained its top spot, while Miranda House and Hansraj College secured the second and third ranks.
IIT Madras also led the engineering category, followed by IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay.
In management education, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad earned the first position.
Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi, topped the pharmacy rankings, while the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi retained its position as the best medical college in India.
This year, the NIRF assessed institutions across 17 categories.
The evaluation relied on five parameters: teaching, learning and resources; research and professional practice; graduation outcomes; outreach and inclusivity; and perception.
The government first introduced the NIRF in 2015 under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, now the Ministry of Education, to establish a transparent system for evaluating higher education institutions nationwide.
