India’s tea exports rose steadily in 2024, posting a 9.92 Per cent growth over the previous year.

As per data released by the Tea Board of India, the country exported 25.47 crore kilograms of tea from January to December 2024, compared to 23.17 crore kilograms in 2023 — marking a significant gain for the industry amidst global demand fluctuations.

According to a report by Business Line, this growth was supported by improved production across regions.

North Indian estates recorded a 9.79 percent increase, producing 15.48 crore kilograms in 2024, up from 14.10 crore kilograms in the preceding year.

South India also showed a 10.11 Per cent rise, contributing 9.99 crore kilograms in 2024 as compared to 9.07 crore kilograms the year before.

However, the trend appeared more mixed in the first quarter of 2025.

From January to March, all-India production rose slightly to 6.92 crore kilograms, compared to 6.75 crore kilograms during the same period in 2024.

The quarterly boost came mainly from North India, where production jumped 14.38 Per cent , touching 4.54 crore kilograms, up from 3.97 crore kilograms a year earlier.

Meanwhile, South India witnessed a sharp dip, producing only 2.39 crore kilograms, down from 2.79 crore kilograms in the preceding period — a 14.38 Per cent decline.

While the year-on-year data signals broad resilience and export strength, the early months of 2025 reflect region-specific volatility. The challenge ahead lies in maintaining this growth momentum while narrowing regional disparities in output.
