Amid efforts to revive strained India-US bilateral ties, a US delegation is likely to visit India next week to negotiate the sale of six additional P-8I maritime patrol aircraft. News reports indicate the team, comprising defence officials and representatives from Boeing, will arrive in Delhi for discussions scheduled from September 16 to 19.
The proposed deal, valued at approximately $4 billion, aims to enhance the Indian Navy's surveillance capabilities in the Indian Ocean region. India already operates a fleet of 12 P-8I aircraft, procured in previous deals worth over $3 billion, which have proven instrumental in anti-submarine warfare and maritime reconnaissance.
This acquisition comes at a time when New Delhi is diversifying its defence procurements away from traditional suppliers like Russia, having signed nearly $20 billion in contracts with US firms since 2018. The visit follows recent positive exchanges between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, signalling a thaw in relations that had frozen due to trade disputes and tariff threats.
Just weeks ago, tensions escalated with the US imposing additional tariffs on Indian goods, but both leaders have expressed commitment to resolving issues through dialogue. Union Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted the strategic importance of such partnerships in addressing regional security challenges, particularly the growing Chinese presence in the area.
Defence analysts note that the P-8I, equipped with advanced radar and torpedo systems, will significantly boost India's operational reach. The Indian Navy has showcased the aircraft's prowess in recent exercises, underscoring its role as a 'game-changer'.
This move aligns with the US strategy to strengthen alliances in the Indo-Pacific, with Trump previously indicating increased military sales to India, including potential F-35 jets in the future. Meanwhile, trade negotiations are also gaining momentum, with India's chief trade negotiator possibly heading to the US soon.
The delegation's visit is seen as a step towards an interim trade deal, easing concerns over the August 27 tariff deadline. Officials remain optimistic, stating that the defence talks could pave the way for broader economic cooperation.
