India and the Maldives have finalised a framework to promote the use of local currencies for cross-border trade, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral ties.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasised New Delhi’s steadfast support for the island nation, stating, “India has always stood by the Maldives. You are a very concrete expression of our neighbourhood first policy.”

The announcement came during Jaishankar’s meeting with Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel in New Delhi.

Khaleel, on a three-day visit, discussed enhancing cooperation in areas such as maritime security, trade, and investment.

“I see that the framework to promote the use of local currencies for cross-border transactions has been signed,” Jaishankar noted, highlighting the growing engagement between the two nations.

The Maldives remains a key maritime neighbour for India in the Indian Ocean Region.

Under the previous administration in Male, bilateral relations saw notable progress, especially in defence and security.

However, ties faced challenges following the election of Mohamed Muizzu, known for his pro-China stance, as Maldivian President in November 2023.

After taking office, Muizzu called for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel, who were later replaced by civilians.

Despite initial tensions, relations improved during Muizzu’s visit to Delhi in October 2024, where he pledged to enhance bilateral ties.
