India and Maldives marked a major shift in their bilateral relationship during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to the island nation, reported The Indian Express.

India extended a Rs 4,850-crore line of credit and initiated Free Trade Agreement (FTA) talks with Maldives, signaling renewed cooperation.

Speaking in Male, PM Modi affirmed, "Our friendship will always remain bright and clear. India will continue to support the development of Maldives’ defence capabilities".

The leaders discussed boosting trade, defence, and infrastructure ties.

“Peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region are our shared goals,” Modi said, highlighting the Colombo Security Conclave’s role in regional maritime security.

President Mohamed Muizzu welcomed the FTA talks and said, “This landmark initiative marks a significant step forward in strengthening our economic partnership.”

He noted India’s key role in Maldivian tourism and announced plans to launch direct flights.

India handed over 3,300 social housing units in Hulhumale and 72 heavy vehicles to Maldives’ Defence Ministry.

PM Modi also inaugurated roads and drainage projects in Addu and announced six new community development projects.

The countries signed four MoUs and three agreements, including partnerships in fisheries, digital solutions, and environmental cooperation.

The visit marks a turnaround in ties, after tensions early in Muizzu’s presidency, which began with an “India Out” campaign.
