India surpassed the United States to become the second-largest market for 5G smartphones in the first half of 2024, with China maintaining its top spot.

The surge in affordable 5G smartphones from brands like Xiaomi, Vivo, and Samsung contributed significantly to this growth, according to a report by Counterpoint Research.

The worldwide shipment of 5G-enabled smartphones saw a 20 per cent year-on-year increase during the first half of 2024, the research firm's data showed, Economic Times reported.

Apple dominated global 5G smartphone shipments with over 25 per cent market share, fuelled by the iPhone 15 and 14 series.

Samsung followed closely, holding more than 21 per cent of the market owing to strong sales of its Galaxy A and S24 series.

Xiaomi secured third place, with India playing a pivotal role in its success.

According to Counterpoint, Xiaomi achieved a triple-digit growth rate in India and recorded double-digit growth in the Middle East, Europe, and China.

For Vivo too, India was the major growth driver along with China and emerging Asian economies.

Among the top 10 brands, Motorola grew the fastest, posting strong growth in the Caribbean and Latin America (CALA), India, MEA and North America markets, the research firm said in its report.
