As a result of reciprocal tariffs imposed by US, Indian exporters rushed shipments to the United States in March 2025, driving exports up by a staggering 35.06 per cent year-on-year.

According to official data released by the Commerce and Industry Ministry on Wednesday (16 April), exports to the US reached $10.14 billion in March, up from $7.51 billion in March 2024, reported Indian Express.

The surge was part of a global trend, as businesses scrambled to dispatch goods before the 2 April deadline for new US tariffs. Tech major Apple reportedly flew in several last-minute consignments of iPhones to avoid the duties, highlighting the scale of the rush.

Although the tariffs were eventually paused for 90 days, exporters had already moved swiftly. For the full financial year 2024–25, India’s exports to the US totalled $86.51 billion, marking an 11.59 per cent rise from $77.52 billion the previous year.

India’s imports from the US also saw growth, rising 9.63 per cent in March 2025 to $3.70 billion. Annual imports stood at $45.53 billion, a 7.44 per cent increase over the previous year’s $42.13 billion.

Overall, India’s total goods and services exports hit a record high of $820.93 billion in 2024–25, up 5.50 per cent from $778.13 billion in 2023–24. Services exports surged 12.45 per cent to $383.51 billion, while goods exports edged up marginally by 0.08 per cent to $437.42 billion.

Just hours before the deadline, US President Donald Trump announced a 90 day suspension of the tariffs, saying, 75 countries had approached the US seeking to sign trade agreements. Despite the pause, Trump raised tariffs on China to 145 per cent.

India and the US are negotiating a trade agreement to double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030, with the first phase expected to conclude by autumn.
