The viral video of a Haryanvi-speaking Indian student who was manhandled by the Port Authority Police Department (PAPD) at Newark Airport has reportedly turned out to be a case of illegal entering into the US without a valid visa.

The PAPD is the agency responsible for law enforcement across major transport hubs in New York and New Jersey.

According to an Indian Express report, the individual is from Haryana and entered the US illegally and will be deported to India.

“Our Consulate in New York has ascertained that the individual who belongs to Haryana had entered the US illegally without a valid visa and was being deported back to India as per a court order,” sources from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) were quoted as saying by Indian Express.

“Once he is fit to travel, the individual will be deported to India,” the MEA sources added.

During his transit at Newark Airport, the individual was restrained and admitted to a medical facility after his behaviour was deemed unfit for travel.

The Indian Consulate in New York had contacted US authorities following the circulation of videos on social media.

Videos and photographs shared on X by Indian-American entrepreneur Kunal Jain showed a young, unidentified individual handcuffed and visibly distressed at Newark Airport on Sunday night (8 June).

In his series of posts, Jain tagged the Indian Embassy in Washington, DC, as well as External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

Responding to the incident, the Indian Consulate in New York stated on Monday evening, “We have come across social media posts claiming that an Indian national is facing difficulties at Newark Liberty International Airport. We are in touch with local authorities in this regard.”
