The Indian Consulate in New York has contacted US authorities following the circulation of videos on social media showing an unidentified Indian man being handcuffed and pinned down at Newark Liberty International Airport, the Indian Express reported.
Indian-American entrepreneur Kunal Jain shared the footage on X.
The video shows a visibly distressed young man, crying and restrained on the airport floor by officers from the Port Authority Police Department (PAPD).
Jain claimed the individual was speaking in “Haryanvi language and accent” and was pleading that the authorities were trying to declare him mentally unfit.
“I witnessed a young Indian student being deported from Newark Airport last night— handcuffed, crying, treated like a criminal. He came chasing dreams, not causing harm. As an NRI, I felt helpless and heartbroken. This is a human tragedy,” Jain wrote in his post.
Taking note of the incident, the Indian Consulate in New York responded, “We have come across social media posts claiming that an Indian national is facing difficulties at Newark Liberty International Airport. We are in touch with local authorities in this regard. The Consulate remains ever committed for the welfare of Indian Nationals.”
Jain, who claimed to have witnessed the incident firsthand, said the young man appeared to be in serious emotional distress as he was taken into custody.
As of now, there is no official confirmation regarding the individual’s identity or whether he remains in the US or has returned to India.
