The Karnataka government has announced a massive infrastructure overhaul of Rs 1.2 lakh crore for Bengaluru aimed at transforming the city’s crumbling roads and easing its notorious traffic congestion.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah revealed the plan after launching a Rs 58.44 crore white-topping and road development project in Chickpet, The New Indian Express reported.
The Chief Minister said the government would push forward several long-pending projects, including Metro line extensions, a Tunnel Road, a new Outer Ring Road, and double-decker roads to decongest Bengaluru.
Highlighting the city’s chronic pothole problem, he said white topping was being undertaken to ensure roads last at least 30 years.
He said that officials have been directed to ensure all potholes are filled by the end of October, adding, “There should be no compromise on quality.”
Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said a detailed project report is being prepared for white topping 500 km of city roads at a cost of Rs 4,000 crore.
“White topping of 148 km of roads has already been taken up. A total of Rs 1,800 crore is being spent on the development of 83 roads,” he said, noting that black-topping work was ongoing for 182 roads spanning 350 km at Rs 695 crore.
The Chief Minister has also sanctioned an additional Rs 1,100 crore for road works.
Shivakumar further announced the construction of a 117 km long Bengaluru Business Corridor, promising “triple compensation” and Transferable Development Rights for farmers affected by the project.
He added that 113 km of elevated corridors are also on the cards.
The government, he said, will add all 28 lakh city properties to the e-khata system.
