INS Tushil And INS Tamal: Indian Navy's Future Frigates Nearing Completion In Russia; Here's All About It

Two Indian Navy warships under construction in Russia are set to be commissioned by the end of this year, facing delays due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The first vessel, named INS Tushil, will be followed by INS Tamal upon commissioning as per a report by NDTV.

These stealth frigates belong to the Tushil class, succeeding the Talwar class and its follow-on frigates, with a team from the Indian Navy's Chief of Material Directorate recently visiting the Russian shipyard for inspection.

Despite challenges, including fitting Ukrainian engines amidst the conflict, progress has improved, with the first warship launched for sea trials conducted by the Russian Navy.

The two vessels are expected to be commissioned in August and December this year.

Meanwhile, two more warships of the series, built with Russian assistance at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), are progressing. GSL is preparing to launch the first vessel for trials soon, aiming for completion by mid-2026.

The project, initiated during the tenure of the late Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, disrupting military programs globally.

These two vessels are likely the final Indian surface ships built in foreign shipyards, as the Indian Navy emphasises self-reliance, promoting domestic shipyards and workforce.
