Chinmoy Prabhu, a prominent monk known for leading protests against violence targeting Hindus in Bangladesh, was reportedly detained by the Dhaka Police’s Detective Branch on Monday (25 November) at Dhaka airport.
Just days earlier, on 22 November, Chinmoy Prabhu had addressed a large protest rally in Rangpur, condemning the increasing attacks on Hindus in the country. This detention occurs amidst growing concerns over incidents of violence against the Hindu minority, including attacks on temples, homes, and businesses.
Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, President of Pundarik Dham in Bangladesh and an ISKCON member, is also among 18 individuals charged with sedition, allegedly for hoisting a saffron flag.
These charges came in the wake of protests by Hindu organisations, which put forth an eight-point demand, including the creation of a tribunal to prosecute minority oppressors, a minority protection law, and the establishment of a dedicated minority ministry.
Bangladesh has seen a surge in unrest following the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Reports suggest a rise in mob violence targeting minorities, particularly Hindus, with numerous incidents of vandalism, looting, and lynching.
Since Sheikh Hasina's ouster and subsequent departure to India, anti-government protests that began over job quota reforms have escalated into broader unrest.
Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus, now heading Bangladesh’s interim government, has urged citizens to ensure the safety of minorities, emphasising their equal rights as citizens of the country.
Despite these assurances, the situation remains tense, with human rights organizations expressing deep concern over the deteriorating conditions for minorities in Bangladesh.
