Israel has threatened to detain Greta Thunberg in “terrorist like conditions” after the Swedish climate activist joined the largest flotilla bound for Gaza, which sailed from Barcelona on Monday (1 September), reported The Indian Express.

This marks Thunberg’s second attempt to reach the occupied territory. In June, Israeli authorities detained and deported her. Bad weather delayed the latest voyage, initially scheduled for Sunday (31 August).

The flotilla, carrying lawmakers, public figures, and activists from several countries, aims to deliver aid to Gaza. Supporters describe it as the “largest solidarity mission” in history.

A United Nations report recently warned that Gaza has entered a “massive famine,” as Israeli authorities continue blocking basic aid and medical supplies.

Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom reported that National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir will urge Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to adopt a tougher stance. “This time, Ben-Gvir will suggest to Netanyahu not to be satisfied with mild detentions and aerial deportation, but instead a deterrent strategy.”

According to news.com.au, citing Israel Hayom, Ben-Gvir proposed seizing flotilla vessels and converting them into “a maritime force for police operations.” He also recommended placing activists in “terrorist-level conditions at Ktzi’ot and Damon (for females) facilities lacking television or radio, without superior-quality meals and involving prolonged custody rather than merely overnight.”

Before departure, Thunberg highlighted the scale of the effort: “The difference between this and previous missions is that now we are dozens of boats, sailing from several ports around the Mediterranean Sea.”

Accusing Israel of violating humanitarian laws, she added, “Israel has been continuously violating international law, blocking humanitarian aid, and escalating violence and mass starvation.”
