Officials reported that a heated gunfight in the Harwan forests near Dachigam in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on Monday (28 July) resulted in the death of a minimum of three unidentified terrorists at the hands of security forces.

"Three terrorists have been neutralised in an intense firefight. Operation Continues," Srinagar-based Chinar Corps of the Army said in an update about 'Operation Mahadev' on social media platform X.

The affiliations and identities of the deceased terrorists were in the process of being determined, The New Indian Express reported.

In response to the Pahalgam attack that resulted in 26 fatalities, security forces initiated a significant operation to locate the culprits. Intelligence gathered over the preceding month indicated a potential shift of the terrorists towards the Dachigam region, approximately 20 km away from the heart of Srinagar.

Nonetheless, it wasn't instantly apparent whether the three eliminated terrorists had any involvement in the attack on 22 April.

On Monday morning, based on intelligence information, the security forces initiated a counterinsurgency operation in the Mulnar region of Harwan.

As security forces conducted area searches, the sound of two separate gunfire rounds echoed from afar.

Backup forces were swiftly deployed to the region, leading to an escalation in search operations. This resulted in the successful neutralisation of the three terrorists.
