In a significant operation on the Line of Control (LoC), the Jammu and Kashmir Police announced that five militants were killed while attempting to cross into the Valley in north Kashmir's Kupwara region.

Security agencies had issued warnings regarding potential militant attempts to infiltrate before winter snowfall cuts off routes.

Acting on specific intelligence, a joint team of security forces launched the operation on the LoC in Kupwara's Machil sector, as confirmed by the police on Thursday (26 October).

During the operation, the joint team intercepted a group of militants attempting infiltration, resulting in a confrontation in which the militants opened fire, leading to a gun battle.

According to the police, two militants were initially killed in the exchange of fire, with three more militants meeting the same fate later. The militants were identified as belonging to the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) group.

As per reports by Indian Express, In an official statement, J&K Police cited Additional Director General of Police, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, confirming the demise of the five militants.

"Identification being ascertained. Search operation in progress. Further details shall follow," the police's statement added.

This infiltration attempt marks the second incident in just four days.

While the Kashmir Valley has seen a decline in infiltration attempts over the past two years, security agencies remain vigilant about possible infiltration attempts before the onset of winter.

A joint security review meeting held on Wednesday (25 October) at the Army's 15 Corps headquarters discussed the region's security nuances in preparation for the upcoming winter season.
